Building Resilience: John Schessler’s Journey

John J. Schessler, MS, SPC, CPT

John J. Schessler is the founder and CEO of Athlete Mindset HQ, a media and education platform dedicated to helping people strengthen the mental side of performance. His work brings together sport psychology, fitness, education, behavior support, and personal development to make mindset training practical and accessible.

John’s interest in resilience is deeply personal.

At ten years old, he developed Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological condition that progressed rapidly and left him fighting for his life. He spent approximately six weeks in a coma, experienced encephalitis, and later faced the demanding process of physical and neurological rehabilitation. At an age when most children were learning through play, sports, and school, John was relearning fundamental abilities and discovering what perseverance looked like long before he had a name for it.

That experience became the first major rebuilding chapter of his life. It taught him that progress is rarely immediate or linear. It is created through patience, support, repeated effort, and the willingness to keep moving—even when the finish line feels far away.

As an adult, John faced another defining turning point. At 28, a DUI forced him to take an honest look at his choices, identity, and direction. That difficult period ultimately became a catalyst for accountability and change, including coming out to his family as a gay man. Instead of allowing the experience to define the rest of his life, he used it as an opportunity to rebuild with greater honesty, purpose, and self-acceptance.

These experiences shaped John’s belief that mindset is not about pretending life is easy or remaining positive at all costs. It is about learning how to respond when life becomes difficult. It means accepting what is true, taking responsibility for what comes next, and continuing to act in alignment with the person you want to become.

John earned a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Adolescent Psychology from Southern New Hampshire University and a Master of Science in Sport Psychology from Capella University. He is also a certified personal trainer, sports psychology coach, and certified wrestling coach. His professional background includes physical education, fitness coaching, physical therapy, behavioral intervention, youth development, and mental-performance education.

Through these roles, John has worked with people of different ages, abilities, experiences, and starting points. This has reinforced one of his central coaching beliefs: performance cannot be separated from the person performing. Confidence, emotional regulation, physical health, environment, relationships, and personal identity all influence how someone trains, competes, learns, and grows.

John created Athlete Mindset HQ to translate research and professional concepts into useful tools for everyday people. Through articles, videos, podcasts, educational resources, and coaching materials, the platform explores confidence, resilience, motivation, performance anxiety, psychological flexibility, fitness, men’s mental health, and personal growth.

Athlete Mindset HQ is not only about winning games, earning recognition, or reaching the next level. It is about developing the skills to navigate pressure, setbacks, uncertainty, and change. It is a place for athletes, coaches, educators, parents, fitness professionals, and anyone committed to becoming more intentional in how they think, respond, and perform.

John’s story is not one of perfection. It is a story of rebuilding—physically, personally, academically, and professionally. That journey remains at the heart of Athlete Mindset HQ and its guiding message:

You are not permanently defined by what happened to you, where you started, or the mistakes you have made. With support, responsibility, and intentional action, you can continue building what comes next.
